Cradle cap is a common skin condition that affects babies and infants.

Also known as infantile seborrheic dermatitis, cradle cap is a type of skin rash that appears on the scalp as flaky, oily and crusty patches that can range in colour from yellow to brown.

The exact cause of cradle cap is not fully understood, but it's believed to be related to overactive oil glands and a type of yeast that lives on the skin.  It's referred to as 'cradle cap' due to the location of the condition on a baby's scalp, similar to a cap however can spread to other areas of the body, such as the eyebrows or behind the ears.

It is a common and temporary condition which can be unsightly and sometimes unsettling for new parents, but with some gentle attention and care will usually go away without medical treatment in most cases. See our guide How To Treat Cradle Cap.

It's important to avoid picking or scratching at the flakes, as this can cause irritation and potentially lead to infection. In severe cases or if in doubt, as always, see your healthcare provider.
